RENEW Committee Volunteers - Promoting the Electrical Trade at Beloit Memorial High School
Wednesday, May 30th, marks the first volunteering event for the newly formed RENEW Committee of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers LU 890. RENEW (reenergizing next generation electrical workers) is comprised of younger members of our local Union- who are looking to serve our communities, families, and those who are in need. As a group, we will be focusing on public service through volunteering, fund raising for charities, supporting our local students, and promoting the trades to younger generations. LU 890 RENEW partnered with Beloit Memorial High School’s construction program students, to design/build low voltage training lab stations for use by students in the Construction-3 curriculum. The event was hosted by BMHS. IBEW LU 890 membership made a donation to the BMHS Construction Program for $1000- to fund this training event. BMHS instructor Mike Wagner coordinated the event with LU 890 RENEW President Shawn Carlson- ensuring the event was a success. With (6) volunteer electricians on hand- we were able to partner each electrician with 2-3 students- and explain the construction and application of the training labs. In total- five new lab stations were constructed and tested. Thirteen BMHS students were in attendance for the event. We will be partnering with Mr. Wagner and the BMHS Construction Program in the future to hold more training opportunities- and promoting the electrical trade and the benefits of union membership. Local 890 is proud to recognize members Tyler Bemus, Jon Hollister, Michael Morehart, LU 890 Vice President Daniel Reuter, and Benjamin Trappe for their instruction and time in assisting students with the build. LU 890 would also like to give a special thanks to Mr. Mike Wagner (instructor) and the students of BMHS Construction Program for the great opportunity to help grow their much-needed program, and in making this night a success. We are Beloit Proud.
